The athletics track at René-Gaillard stadium, entirely renovated during summer and autumn 2026, is once again accessible to athletes, particularly members of Stade Niortais.
Athletes have returned to the track at René-Gaillard stadium in Niort. Closed for several months to allow for major renovation work, the athletics ring was completely rebuilt during summer and autumn 2026. Since its reopening, athletes can once again train on a new surface that meets current standards.
The first to benefit are members of Stade Niortais, the local athletics club, who had to make do with temporary facilities or relocations during the construction work. The track's return to service marks an important milestone for the sport in the urban area, both for competitors and recreational runners.
The work covered the entire track surface, with a new surface designed to offer better performance and improved safety for users. The lines and lanes have also been redrawn, in accordance with current standards for athletics events. The surrounding areas and ancillary equipment have also been restored.
This reopening comes at a time when the winter season is in full swing. Athletes from Stade Niortais will thus be able to prepare their regional and national competitions under good conditions. Access times and track usage arrangements are managed by the city of Niort, in coordination with the club.
The municipality had scheduled these works to modernize a heavily used sports facility. The project, carried out during the summer and autumn period, helped minimize disruption for users, although the closure did force some to adapt. From now on, the René-Gaillard track is returning to its primary function: hosting athletes and running enthusiasts.
