Despite a first half they controlled, US Méral Cossé fell to Bonnétable from set pieces late in the match.
US Méral Cossé suffered a frustrating defeat on Sunday in Régional 2 against Bonnétable. The Mayenne-based side thought they had done the hardest part by controlling the match, but they ultimately succumbed in the final minutes from set pieces.
The first half was indeed in favor of the home side, who controlled their game without managing to convert. Just after the break, an opportunity to extend the lead presented itself, but it went begging. This lack of clinical edge proved costly.
In the second half, an individual error allowed Bonnétable to equalize. Then, in stoppage time, the Sarthe side made the difference from two set pieces, showing more accuracy and cunning than their opponents. A cruel end to the match for Méral-Cossé, who leave with zero points.
In the end, Bonnétable demonstrated surgical efficiency, while Méral-Cossé will need to learn from this scenario. The Mayenne-based side will need to correct course in the coming matchdays to avoid letting precious points slip away in the race for survival or the top of the table, depending on their ambitions.
This defeat leaves a bitter taste, but it also illustrates the room for improvement that remains. The Méral-Cossé players will need to show a more attacking approach in the future to avoid experiencing such a disillusion again.
